Kunmi Coker: Barbados, An Island Getaway.
Location: Island Country in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles
Duration: 5 days
Peak of my Holiday: Waking up to the most amazing views every morning and paddle boarding!
Pit of my Holiday: Trying to get a picture with Lewis Hamilton and Rihanna and I did not even get close!
I visited Barbados on a family vacation in August 2015. It was about a 3 hours flight from Miami, Florida. Barbados like many other Caribbean destinations is well known for its hot sandy beaches, amazing coastline hotels, an abundance of beach bars and rife with restaurants. It has been labelled many people’s dream gateway!
We arrived onto the breezy island late in the evening and spent majority of the evening relaxing and unpacking. We had just missed the crop over festival, which ended two days prior to my disappointment! I definitely recommend people going during the carnival! If its anything like the other Caribbean festival, it is ONE BIG PARTY!

Amazing View to wake up to!!
The next day was spent in the hotel pretty much relaxing by the poolside, jet skiing and paddle boarding on the Caribbean Sea! On the following day, we took a tour round the island. Our first stop was the Bajan Parliament, which is situated near the National Heros square. The Bajan political system is based of the Westminster system of government and patterned after the Parliament of England keeping its close link with it former colonial power.
My dad and brother absolutely adore sports, which was perfect as the island is renowned for its cricket. We visited the Kensington oval, which is locally referred to as “The Mecca of Cricket”. It has hosted many important and exciting West Indies cricket and international games. We then took a detour around the port seeing cruise liner’s arriving with excited passengers. We drove round the island passing through different parishes and their churches and after 45 minutes arrived at the most northern and top most point of the island. A very beautiful and scenic view with the roaring noise of waves crashing against the cliff!

The North Point of the island!

Harrison’s Cave: stalactites and stalagmites formations
We had breakfast most times in the hotel in an open restaurant overlooking the beach. And had dinner and lunch most times outside the restaurant. My personal recommendation will be Cin Cin by the sea and the tides, some advice; guys you need proper shoes on! For a taste of real Bajan delicacies, the Brown Sugar comes highly recommended.
Harrison’s Cave is also a major tourist attraction, if you are interested in geology and geography this is the place to be! It has the most beautiful natural geological featuring’s of stalactites and stalagmite formations, we spent about an hour there it was that amazing. We also got the opportunity to visit the oldest and only standing saw mill on the island.

The oldest saw mill on the island!

Island Girl!
On the whole, Barbados was a very quite and relaxing holiday. Bajan people are easy going and friendly. If you do prefer a bubbling and noisy environment Barbados might not be the place to go- try Aruba!
